Chris Moses and I recently co-created our first Croning Ceremony and I was the honored crone. What an honor and what a blessing it was. In case you don’t know what a crone is, it is the name for the third phase of a goddess’ life: maiden, mother and crone. We designed a Passage Ritual that showcased women’s deep connection with one another, our spiritual community, a celebration of the impact I have had on others, and my 13 commitments as a female elder.
We celebrated on the beach of Lake Michigan on a beautiful Sunday evening with 25 of us participating in what we hope to be the first of this kind of time-honored ritual. The experience was an amazing gift that filled me to the brim with purpose, love and profound gratitude. What a life affirming event – a peak experience to be sure and I am now walking into this last phase of my life with aliveness, clarity and excitement.
Often we wait until our funerals for this kind of honoring and celebration. How much better (an understatement to be sure) it is to have this kind of experience now. We look forward to doing more of these and creating a Crone Sisterhood thereby running interference on the focus this culture has on youth and its dismissal of the aged. In many indigenous and ancient cultures a female elder was respected and revered as a healer and a teacher and possessing the wisdom needed to direct the rest of the community.
Now we are ready to offer this rich experience to any woman over 50 who is ready to claim the dignity, grace, and acknowledgement of cronehood. We welcome these women into an expanding circle of love, wisdom and power.
